Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau: It felt so wrong, it felt so right

SO RIGHT
SO WRONG

The Topline

He kissed a girl and he liked it

Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau are dating. It sounds like something your aunt would post on Facebook in between rants about tipping culture and AI-generated minion memes. But it’s true .

Any time two famous people get together, there are going to be cynics. This match feels particularly insane, though, on par with Kim K and Pete Davidson or Zach Braff and Florence Pugh . It’s hard to imagine what the 41-year-old divorced brunette who promised us feminism has in common with the 53-year-old divorced brunette who promised us sustainability … or is it? The pair have more similarities than we may think, and it’s been proven that opposites don’t actually attract .

Other than the obvious headlines, it’s tough to parse out what either of these often-critiqued celebs would have to gain from a fake relationship. Maybe Perry’s unprecedented 11-minute space flight made her want to make out with more than just the ground . Maybe Trudeau needed advice on how to make Halloween headlines for the right reasons . Are we so jaded that we don’t believe that two rich white people could really, genuinely like each other? Maybe – but this relationship still feels genuine.

Perhaps the most compelling evidence that this is the real deal is the lack of evidence itself. Other than a photo of them on a sidewalk together in July , hugging on a yacht in October and then a video of them holding hands a few days ago , there hasn’t been much paparazzi buzz (and the pics by paps don’t seem staged, as some celebs are known to do ).

Trudeau and Perry have both been in the spotlight for decades, and they both certainly have publicists who do everything they can to protect their reputations. But with no album release or big career move on the horizon for either Perry or Trudeau, it’s possible that this relationship isn’t meant to stir up gossip or sell a song or campaign. Maybe the California Gurl simply fell for the Ottawa boy.

Don’t mean they’re in love tonight

It’s a risk to even write about Justin Trudeau and Katy Perry’s relationship in 2025, because it’s probably going to be over by the time this sentence is being typed. No matter how hard these celebrities might try to edit their legacies, culture always gets the last say: Trudeau will always be the all-Canadian nepo baby and Katy Perry will always be an astronaut .

Some outlets have pointed out that Trudeau’s politician dad also dated a pop star (Barbra Streisand) and a couple celebrities (including Kim Cattrall – funny, because Trudeau Sr. was a total Charlotte). Both were short-lived. Both were also several decades younger than him, so in a way, Justin is being very radical in his decision to publicly date a woman only 12 years his junior.

From the perspective of us normies, it’s been a rough year for Perry and Trudeau. These two could both use a boost, and a newsworthy, if unsettling, relationship gets them both back in the spotlight. Trudeau’s most notable headline from the last year is his resignation and Perry’s is either her latest album flopping or, yeah, being an astronaut . They probably yearn for the good old 2010s, when Trudeau was a hottie that gave Canadians hope and Perry was a chart-topping firework .

Do you ever feel like a plastic bag? Well, a few blurry paparazzi photos and one TMZ video later, you, too, can make headlines again – so long as you have a divorced dad with inarguably good hair wrapped around you.
